Two Become One

That's the meaning of the heart symbol. I remember as a child in science class, I learned that the mammalian heart was not heart shaped at all. The implication was that whoever had started drawing hearts for Valentine's Day had gotten it seriously wrong.

Then one day, studying one of my books on symbols, I ran across the description of the heart. It is 2 spirals, representing 2 people that have been joined together to become one. It reminded me of Plato's idea that we are all paired souls, separated by birth and given the task of finding each other in life.

Loving spirals as I do, suddenly the idea of creating heart shapes in my work seemed not the least bit smarmy. I do them asymmetrically and as abstractedly as possible to give the designs more complexity. They are balanced in their imbalance, and, if one wanted to read too much into them, probably prophetic of most relationships as well.
